Directorate General of Higher Education (Directorate General of Higher Education) Ministry of National Education has recently released a list of 50 colleges that promise, or 50 Promising Indonesian Universities. From that list, there are 28 state universities (PTN) and 22 private universities (PTS). One is the Padang State University

State University of Padang (UNP) is the result of conversion into university IKIP Padang, which was originally called the Higher Education Teacher Education (PTPG). Since its establishment on 1 September 1954, the UNP has undergone many changes. In the history of its development, changes in the changes include not only the name and place of his position, but also status and educational programs are developed, in accordance with the policy to meet the demands of the development of education in the country.

This change can be classified into five periods, ie periods PTPG Batusangkar, Andalas University FKIP period Bukittinggi in Batusangkar, FKIP period Andalas University, Padang, Jakarta Branch IKIP period Padang, Padang IKIP period and the period of the UNP
