UNEJ comes from a clandestine university called University of Tawang Alun, accustomed back November 4, 1957. At first, the University of Tawang Alun has one faculty, the Adroitness of Law. In 1960 founded the Adroitness of Public Administration and Company (ANP), a year after became the Adroitness of Social and Political Science (Faculty Sospol). At the appeal of the community, the University of Tawang Alun in the aforementioned year to add new adroitness faculties, namely Adroitness of Agriculture, Adroitness of Education, and Adroitness of Medicine.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP) Number 95 Year 1962 anachronous August 1, 1962, Adroitness of Medicine, Adroitness of Agriculture and accomplished by the University of Airlangga, Surabaya. On January 5, 1963, University of Tawang Alun dinegerikan Brawidjaja affiliation with the University of Malang beneath Ministerial Decree No. 1 Year 1963 PTIP, anachronous January 5, 1963. Although the University has dinegerikan Tawang Alun, its cachet is still as a annex of the University Brawidjaja (UNBRA) amid in Jember with several faculties, namely: (1) Adroitness of Law and Public Knowledge, (2) Adroitness of Agriculture, (3) Adroitness of Education, ( 4) Adroitness of Social and Political Rights, and (5) Adroitness of Medicine. Cachet of the Adroitness of Law and Adroitness of Agriculture, appropriately as a annex of the Adroitness of Law and Adroitness of Agriculture UNBRA Malang, while the Adroitness of Education, Adroitness of Social and Political Sciences, and Adroitness of Medicine, stands abandoned in Jember. Then, in the 1963/1964 Academic Year accustomed two new faculties, namely Adroitness of Letters and Adroitness of Economics, which is amid in Banyuwangi beneath UNBRA Djember branch.

In 1963, the Adroitness of Medicine UNIBRAW Malang, Jember Annex chip into the Adroitness of Airlangga University in Surabaya, while Teacher Training and Education is chip into the Teachers' Training College of Malang. Based on Ministerial Decree No. 151/1964 PTIP, November 9, 1964, University Brawidjaja branches Djember contrarily angle abandoned with the cachet of the country became the State University UNED Djember with abbreviations. Djember State University if it had four faculties, namely: (1) Adroitness of Law (in Jember with branches in Banyuwangi), (2) Adroitness of Social and Political Rights (in Jember), (3) Adroitness of Agriculture (in Jember), (4) Adroitness of Economics (Banyuwangi), and (5) Adroitness of Literature (in Banyuwangi).
On the base of action through Decree No. 583/AU/22/1965 rector, anachronous December 31, 1965, Adroitness of Economics and Adroitness of Literature, which is amid in Banyuwangi to Jember transferred. Furthermore, by accommodation of the Director General of Higher Education No. 161 Year 1967, alpha January 1, 1968, the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (Teachers' Training College) Djember Malang annex that originally chip with UNBRA Malang, and again chip into the State University Djember. Adroitness of Education, Adroitness of Literature and Art IKIP Malang these Djember anniversary annex became the Adroitness of Education and the Adroitness of Letters, State University of Djember.
Based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 61 Year 1982, September 7, 1982, the State University of Jember University Djember set called by the acronym UNEJ.
