Ki Hadjar Dewatara (KHD) – the Founding Father of Indonesia National Education- established a higher education of Tamansiswa on the 3rd of July 1922. Tamansiswa as an Institution of Culture and Community Development regards education in a wide sense. In the beginning, education held by Tamansiswa Schooling is a kinder-garten “Taman Indria“, next were an elementary schools “Taman Muda” , Junior High Schools “Taman Dewasa“ , Teacher’s Schools “Taman Guru” , vocational schools “Taman Karya” and Senior High Schools “Taman Madya”. In the 30 years’ time , on the 15th of November 1955 , Taman Prasarjana was founded by Ki Hadjar Dewantara which was later named as Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University.
At the beginning, Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa is a name of a course B One. This pre-faculty was identified as Taman Prasarjana which run three departments : Language Department (Javanese and Indonesian) , Social Department (Geography and History) and Department of Physics and Science. Some years later, in 1959, the institution was modified into Taman Sarjana with one faculty of Letters and Philosophy.
After the members of the foundation held some meetings, the signing of a founding letter on the establishment of the founding of Sarjanawiyata Foundation was done on the witness of a notary R.M Wiranto in Yogyakarta on the 28th of December 1959. One of the founders was Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX and Nyi Hadjar Dewantara. Firstly, the foundation was headed by Ki Sarino Mangunpranoto. The first activity was preparation of the establishment of the Faculty of Education, the first lecture of which was held in October, 1960. It was preceded by a Stadium Generale on education and philosophy in Pendopo Agung Tamansiswa .
On the 41st Tamansiswa Commemoration Day, on the 3rd July, the name was changed into Taman Sarjana and Education Science (Departments : Education Science, Physics, History Science, Geography , Indonesian, Javanese and English). Again in October the 1st 1964, it was modified into Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University and the rector was Nyi Hadjar Dewantara who then managed four Taman Sarjana (Faculty of Education, Geography, Law and Economics, Letters and Culture - Indonesian and English Language and History).
In 1980, Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa managed the Diploma Program in Education, Indonesian Language and Letters which is expanded into Department of English Language, Mathematics, Service Skills, Education in Pancasila Morality. In 1983, it became a university comprising of some faculties with some departments. Those are Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Psychology and Faculty of Engineering.
